POWER & PURITY: THE THEOLOGY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT · WEEK 1 OF 2

The Bell and the Pomegranate

Exodus 28:33-34 | Acts 2:4 | Isaiah 28:10-12 | 1 Corinthians 13:1 | ESV

Exodus 28:33-34

...a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, around the hem of the robe.

The Big Idea

God never designed a priest with only bells or only pomegranates. The Spirit-filled life is the sound of His power and the sweetness of His character - alternating, inseparable, and fully worn.

1. The Garment God Designed

God is not content with just your fruit. He is not content with just your gifts. He is weaving both into the hem of your life - and the pattern is always alternating. Every bell on the High Priest's robe was made of gold - the same material as the altar and the mercy seat. The gifts of the Spirit are not decorative. They are made of holy things.

2. The Timeline of the Flame

Acts 2, 10, and 19 are not isolated events. They are a pattern - and Acts 2:39 says the promise is for you, your children, and all who are far off. In Caesarea, Peter knew the Gentiles had received the Spirit not by checking their theology - but by hearing the Bell. "They were hearing them speaking in tongues." (Acts 10:46)

3. The Stammering Lips and the Rest

Tongues is not just the evidence of Spirit baptism - it is the ongoing practice of the Spirit-baptized life. It is the believer's private place of rest with God. What was judgment for the proud in the Old Covenant becomes refreshment for the humble in the New. Isaiah 28 called it 'rest for the weary.' Paul called it building yourself up.

4. The Bell is the _________ and the Pomegranate is the _________.

5. Peter knew the Gentiles received the Spirit because he _________

them.

6. Isaiah 28 says tongues is meant to give _________ to the weary.

7. Without love, even the best gifts are just ________ (1 Cor. 13:1).

Take It Home

  1. 1.

Which is thinner in your life right now - the Bell or the Pomegranate? What would it look like to develop the one you've been neglecting?

  2. 2.

Have you been Spirit-baptized? If not, what is one step you could take this week to seek that experience?
